A couple weeks ago I finally came to my wit's end with the wild birds eating my chicken feed. It's like the Wild Kingdom out there. I decided that a treadle feeder might end my wild bird problem. I designed my feeder using the best features of all the treadle feeders I could find out there on the web. My Double-Treat-Treadle-Feeder holds two kinds of dry feed, I'm putting layer pellets and BOSS in there. The feeder holds 37 lbs. of layer pellets total. I just finished putting up the instructions on my BYC page: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=56638-building-a-treadle-feeder

I really like the concept......But do they use it...I like to work with wood and am very interested in building one if my chickens would actually us it. It looks great and thanks for the plans !!!

Hi moondog425. I updated my page and added links to youtube videos of chickens using treadle feeders (they are at the bottom of the feeder page). There will, undoubtably, be a learning period.

Thanks GDC , i will check it out.

We like it! We feed the wild birds here,.. but I would like it if they ate THEIR food and not our chicken feed,.. My FIL can build anything ( he and DH built most of our home) so I am going to see if he will make one for us,.. he always says yes!
Thanks!

Can ya smell the crawfish boiling Gallo del Cielo? Then wake up 'cause you're dreaming again!!!

FANTASTIC!

Before I took over BYC there was a page with a video of someone that made this same type of feeder:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/LC-feeders.html

I ALWAYS get asked for plans... so glad someone on BYC finally posted them. I've linked to your page from the page above, so hopefully many will be able to finally make this cool device.

BTW, I'm thinking about making one to keep the rats from always having a free meal. We're like a 24/7 fast food place for the little buggers!

Thanks (yet again) for the info.

I have been thinking of a way to make one of these that would have two feed bins and two treadles: one treadle just inside the wall in the coop and the outside one to extend down into the run....
I believe the PVC feeder would be easier for me, but the self closing lid on this makes it much better.
