My experience almost exactly the same as yours. He's a Barred Rock which I noticed is mentioned as one of the more friendly breeds. In my experience of more roosters and cockerels than I will admit to, I've found that it varies bird to each individual bird. The way you act around the bird will make a difference too. Also, not all can be trained to respect you. I've tried everything with my jerk and to be completely honest, I think the extra attention has made him more aggressive and more determined to dominate me. My daughter (9yo) still loves him but only through a fence. She's the only reason he's made it to almost 2 years old.View attachment 2522912 He’s probably ten pounds and has spurs three inches long, you hold him down! I’ve heard to treat em like a pet and just the opposite. My first rooster was raised by a little girl. She carried him around like a baby doll. Once he became fully mature, he would sneak up on me and rake me with his spurs.
He sure is handsome! Wow. I'd worry about an aggressive rooster running around whenever you have a child that's also running around near him.View attachment 2522912 He’s probably ten pounds and has spurs three inches long, you hold him down! At what age do rooster get spurs ???He sure is handsome! Wow. I'd worry about an aggressive rooster running around whenever you have a child that's also running around near him.
Bumps seem to start for my males at about 15 weeks and grow from there. If you want them short and blunt, you need to physically trim and blunt themAt what age do rooster get spurs ???
Like @Bigtom Turkey and @JacinLarkwell replied above, they usually will have enlarged spur buds that break through the bud around 4 to 5 months. As they age, they'll get larger and longer. I haven't ever removed spurs but I know that if they are removed, they will grow back. My almost 2 year old Roosters spurs get thin as they come to point and that point will almost like "shed" off, but only about a half inch at a time and it's not something that happens often. In fact, I've just discovered this shedding recently and the boys will be 2 years old May 20 2021At what age do rooster get spurs ???
Many people have reported Barred Rock roosters being aggressive. I myself had an aggressive Barred Rock rooster.X2 there are certain breeds that have a good reputation for being kind
(Orps, Barred Rocks, Faverolles Cochins )
