Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Nice! Just curious. Lol. I have also played around with the ultrasound here for fun. xD
Wonder if you could use it for crop impactions and such? 🤔 to get a feel for what’s actually in there. (I keep asking my boss if he would be willing to do all these things with my birds, ultrasound or xray them if they eat something stupid or have a leg issue, etc. He’s been pretty good so far but he drew the line at a vasectomy for my drake. Drat!) :lau
I haven't ultrasounded a chicken. Maybe I should try. We have 0 vets that will see chickens so I do all their medical stuff myself. I'll help my local chicken friends too if I can. I have a bs in vet technology that I just finished this summer. Still have to take my licensing exam next month. I'd rather work in a lab than an office though so I think I'm going back to get a masters in animal science. No ones hiring around here either so that's good motivation to go back. I want to learn caponing even though I've heard mixed things about it. I think I'll practice on freshly processed cornish crosses.

Should I be concerned about this peep? It's chirping and I saw its beak move. Is it blood I'm seeing (the brownish) or what? I suppose it could just be the chick. They are blue Ameraucanas, so I could get black chicks, too.

I'm sitting on my hands, but very curious about it! I got to watch the BBS marans chick hatch - so cool.

@CluckNDoodle i have a magicfly that holds 24 and HB life that holds 12. They are both forced air with the auto turners

Can anyone recommend a good calibrated thermometer we got 2 probe style thermometers/ hygrometers and they are so far off it’s ridiculous I go by the metal oven thermometers we have that I tested in ice/ boiling water.. and these small hygrometers we have seem to work well
I am loving this new one, got off amazon, it has an app with an alarm and is calibratable one:

Govee Temperature Humidity Monitor, Indoor Bluetooth Thermometer Hygrometer Gauge, Wireless Temp Humidity Sensor with Alert, Data Export Thermometer Humidity for Home Garage Cigar Humidor Greenhouse:

only problem I could see would be feathers getting in the way. 🤔 now I’m curious. Lol.
thats great! I know an awesome vet tech here that didn’t want to do gen practice and is in research now. Lots of options out there. :)
My feeling on the issues surrounding caponing would be based primarily on animal welfare. Not sure about elsewhere but here the requirements are constantly changing for so many things. I might look into that, usually CVMA puts out position statements on things like that... lots of food for thought. :)

End of day 5 for me. I candled yesterday and I for sure see 2 or 3 growing in there! I'm pretty sure thee rest are growing too, though. I've been keeping my temp at around 100.4 and humidity at around 40. Ugh, waiting is the worst.:caf
idk...finding a temp spike at lock down , makes your blood pressure spike at .....good luck with your hatch.

Had my first fatality. I think it was a male chick because his comb was well defined and the other chick that hatched last night who had the same comb is a male.

I think he turned the wrong way and suffocated. He pipped but then when he turned again he turned wrong. I didn’t see any breathing but my husband said to let it do its thing. Hours later no change and sure enough it was dead 😢
bummer, Sorry...such fragile little things, such an amazing process they go thru
