Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

This upcoming Thursday or Friday! What about yours? I have lost a lot along the way so it’s looking like it’ll just be a couple Olive eggers and Easter Eggers if all goes well.

Ah that's too bad. Mine are due Friday too. Last I checked a couple days ago, I have 8 for sure and 2 marans I'm not sure of. I think one is clear.

Today is D7 so I candled all my eggs, all 10 of my shipped eggs and 8 from my girls have the spider and movement that includes my grandson's barred rock mix.

I have 3 clear and 3 with just a dark mass, are the ones with mass good or bad

If you don't see veins, most likely not good. You can give it a bit more time to be sure.

My incubator retains humidity really well, so I don't worry too much about the eggs in there getting shrink-wrapped. I just avoid opening it at all when someone is actively zipping. My first hatch, I threw a blanket over myself and the incubator when I had to open it haha.

When I need to assist with an egg, I put a warm wet paper towel over it and ferry it quickly to my bathroom, where I will have had the shower running on hot.

I've never had anyone get shrink-wrapped, although I have had someone get encrusted with blood after they hit a blood vessel.

I have had a handful of shrink wraps but they all survived and we're talking about a very small number of chicks out of like 150 maybe? So maybe it was due to something else. No way for me to know but I do know it doesn't hurt them as much as it hurts me to wait a little longer in the incubator.

Nice! So fun we have the same hatch day. I have 2 Marans from him too and think they are clear or quitters but I left them in for now.

Well, looks like only 4 out of 45 are developing. Disappointing, but that's life. Got 32 so far for Set 2 and I'll set on Monday. Up to 48 possible by then, likely about 44 though. We'll see.

I'll move them to my mini7 then to give them more time, and set 6 more shipped eggs that are waiting. I am so excited that I have fertilized eggs from my girls and my grandson is happy that his BR is showing progress.

Well it seems the Marans curse has reached me, lol. I candled tonight and I can't see much in the eggs, 2 definitely developing, 1 blood ring, and 8 that I can't see anything in. It's only day 5 so hopefully it's just because the shells are dark and not because I have a ton of infertile eggs. She did mention that they weren't laying much, it took her a week to collect 11 eggs, so maybe it's just a bit early for her Marans. I'll wait until about day 10 before I decide on the others.

I am running at 50% rate on my Birchen Marans eggs. 2/4 in the first batch due Thursday. The 6 in the second batch have 3 developing, 2 that are light enough to see that they are clear, and one I'm not ready to give up on because it is pretty dark and speckled. I'll candle again in a couple of days.
