Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

* If you already know all this, it is not for you and I am not trying to insult* Seek advice before helping... When helping a chick from an egg and see blood stop helping, (to stop blood if you see it you can dab flour.) Chicks in eggs that are taking their time to hatch after a pip may have veins and are taking time to absorb the veins/juices, also the longer they take in the egg to breathe air from the pip, it helps to absorb so letting it wait in an egg 24 hrs is a good thing. A pip doesn't mean ready to hatch. I like that, so I will repeat ...A pip doesn't mean ready to hatch.

Oh no! That's a big hole. :( Definitely don't give it back to the broody and I would watch that she doesn't start pecking at other eggs, I don't think this could be done but stepping on it. What day is it on?
Her other eggs are totally fine, that's what's so weird. Maybe one of the other animals in the house spooked her and it made her peck the egg or something? It's a big hole. She's still sitting on the eggs diligently. I will take this one and try to help it and let her keep the other two. It is D21 so I am expecting them to hatch today or tomorrow.

This is great advice! I found her egg like this, with the gaping hole. It is super strange and I'm not sure how it happened - pecking or stepping or SOMEthing. It definitely is not from a pip, the chick isn't even internally pipped. Still fully enclosed in the membrane.

Day 21 is a good thing! Hopefully it will internally pip soon. Once it hatches you can sneak it back under her at night if you feel comfortable that she isn't acting out toward the chicks. Some broodies are crazy and even if they're good about sitting it's like they don't understand the concept of the chick hatching because they're sitting.

I can see it moving against the membrane and the movements dont appear to be weak or anything. I'm not sure how serious the bleeding is - I applied pressure with a q-tip and barely got any. Hopefully internally it isn't bleeding badly. I've put it in the incubator. And will be peering in at it frequently. I'm not sure how great a chance it has, but I really dont think it's ready for anymore assistance at this time.

All 11 hatched now...one is still in the incubator...

I didn't want to say you did that to your egg, but you hear so often people not letting nature hatch, and sometimes I do have to tell myself sit on your hands. But I know sometimes you have to help.

I had 2 more chicks hatch LO. and another female cream legbar.
No worries, I'm not offended at all. I don't think there's ever a bad time to remind everyone just how long of a process hatching is! If this chick were showing more signs of needing help I might have stepped in, but since it is not even internally pipped I really dont think it's ready to come out and would certainly die if I forced it out, no matter how slowly.

It's in the incubator now. I will be checking on it every couple of hours to see what's happening.

I'm coming! Breeder scheduled an egg ship date of Monday, February 10 for 6 Lemon Pyle Brahma eggs, 3 Silver laced Wyandotte, and 3 Buff laced Wyandotte. Incubator holds 14....so might sneak 2 more in if I stumble across a seller who will do such a small order. Be back as soon as eggs are in the house :fl.
I orderbrahmas too, cackle farms do small orders pay more but worth it. Very impressed with thier vet. Put him on retainer for i year. $25. Dream come true for me cuz im tired of feeling so grateful to vets for helping me. I own him.lol. i figure all get moneys worth in a week. The poor guy.lol let you know. At least i can actuallly access the site when i need it without ridiculous password. I tried the link i got from here and spent 45 pouring out my questions carefully wording it thinking i get answer and then they asked for money. Gave em my information and still havent heard. Stupid

It sounds like it was a very minor bleed. You would likely see the white of the membrane changing color if there was a lot more.

She kind of forced you into a situation where this is now an assisted hatch though. You'll most likely have to do something to keep the membrane moist eventually. It may be a long assist because the chick hasn't internally pipped yet.
