Eggs are cheaper than chicks at most hatcheries I've looked at. The shipping is what usually costs more because they have to pack them more than they would chicks.

You're not they are lol. I think some breeders are even more expensive but better quality birds so it is worth it in my eyes at least.
I agree that breeders charge more but the chicks you're getting grow into amazing birds. I stick with my farm eggs... They cost only the price of feed

I figure it's giving me a bit of a leg up. English Orps are heavier than hatchery versions. Since I want to use the cockerels in the future for meat I need to add some girls that are a bit heavier. So hatching eggs is the way to go lol.
Like, I'm looking right now at Light Brahma hatching eggs at Cackle. With shipping, a dozen of them is $54.36. That's $4.53 per chick if by some absolute miracle you managed to hatch 12 chicks after shipping. Whereas, I could pick up chicks at the farm store for $2.99 each. That's why I just don't savvy why it's such a popular thing 
I'm in the southwest and they take a break here too. Trust me, I heard my husband threatening the girls with the bbq all winterSounds like a great breed for northerners like me whose hens often take a break in the winter. So long as they are cold hardy. I am happy to let my hens take a break, but I do hate it when I have to buy eggs from the store. Only happened once this winter, though!
Not that I'm trying to say anyone shouldn't, whatever makes ya happy, ya know? It just confuses me is all, lol.

I definitely agree that in most instances ordering from a major hatchery is subjecting yourself to extortion lol. Especially if you consider that buying day old chicks from a big farm store gets you the same quality birds (as they come from those same big hatcheries) without the hassle of shipping. Still, there is an appeal in some instances. I am very limited in the selection available in my area. We only have one small TSC, and apparently a lack of chicken breeders as well.
