Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

No experience with emu eggs, so take this with a grain of salt. Could you put one it a plastic container with a lid for a few minutes and then have your nose right next to it when you open it? Maybe that would concentrate the scent enough to identify the offender? That would also give your nose time to clear out, provided you do it in a different room.

These are all really good ideas and I'm taking notes for when I hatch some emus. lol

Did you weigh them when they went in? One might assume a dead one will be heavier than the others percentage wise from when they started...

I weighed them upon incubator entry and once a week since then. There are two possible culprits now that I think about it 🤔

One egg lost almost 7 grams too much and another egg didn’t lose enough, actually about 7 grams too little. All of the others are within 2 to 3 grams of the goal weights. So I may really check these two and see if they’re it! Thanks for the reminder on checking weights! It really tells a story, I just figured one area was dryer in the incubator, so I switched the two spots lol

This is the quicky chart I go by. This egg is on target. I don’t have a photo of the two that are pretty far off.

I don’t have a computer, so I can’t be fancy like the other pretty charts! A little jealous now that I compare the two.

I'd rather handwritten in a notebook. Computers crash, get viruses, and files get lost. I'm not trusting my notes on technology 😂

Experiment update...

1) Eggs that have been sprayed and cooled have bigger air cells

2) The 12 that have not been sprayed have small air cells almost the same as day 7

That makes sense! Will you begin spraying all of them or will you continue the experiment till hatch? How long did you decide to allow them to cool?

I get a basket and pick out all the 18 I'm spraying and cooling. I spread a towel on the floor and spray them with my distilled water I have in a spray bottle. I do chores till they dry then I put them back in the incubator.

And no I'm not messing with those 12. I want to see if they hatch regardless. I picked 12 because if I did only single digit amount of eggs it could be said that those wouldn't hatch anyways. I wanted to choose a good enough number without taking too many.

Very interesting! We may try hatching ducks and this info will be helpful.

And while you’re doing chores, could you pop in and do mine? Thanks!

So about 10-15 minutes?
