Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

@CluckNDoodle what's my next step?

I put some olive oil on the membrane just a little bit on my finger like a drop and rubbed it on the membrane.

I'm literally like this 😳 that was intense. It's breathing.

I bet it would have been dead if I would have left it in there for a little bit longer because it couldn't pip through due to it trying to pip through the wrong place.

My little ducky I was talking to it and it nibbled my finger 😂

You guys I am 💩ing my pants...

I don't even know how I did this without even nicking a vein. The outer membrane of the shell was pretty much stuck to the membrane that the duckling is in if that makes any sense.

So I had to stick a knitting needle between the egg membrane and the duckling membrane and slowly work my way down and peel...

I don't know how no veins broke or anything.

I used an 18 gauge needle to pierce the membrane and slowly rip it open so that the duckling could breathe.

Now how do I keep that membrane moisturized because I did put water in my incubator so that it would have at least some humidity in it.

Help!!!

Literally I'm sweating. If this duckling does not make it I am going to be so upset.

and by the way it's bill was way down at the bottom of the egg as you can see 🤔

Holy cow! Great job not not nicking anything! Definitely malpositioned. I hope it pulls through for you, lots of yolk sac to finish absorbing from the looks of it. I would try antibioitc ointment (without pain reliever) since it's going to be a long assist. I've never used it before but I do know from personal experience that if you don't reapply coconut oil often enough that it does harden the membrane.

Ok olive oil works too. That's fine, just reapply every so often.

So add some triple antibiotic ointment?

Good thing I have some on hand. I don't get why it hasn't absorbed. I guess after this assist I can literally do any assist 🙈 yesterday I had to push in a ducklings intestines!

I have a little bowl of it next to the bator.

How often should I reapply?

I don't know what I would do without your guys
encouragement because if I was the person that I was last year with hatching I would have just let it die inside the shell.

Maybe I just want another duckling 😂

When you need to reapply you can use the ointment next time and it should last longer for you. Right now you just have a lot of waiting. :fl :fl :fl

How long do you think I will have to wait?

There were so many tiny little veins where it's bill was. Think the 18 gauge sterile needle was just perfect for this little duckling. I'm definitely keeping those on hand for every hatch!

The knitting needle works very well too because it's very long and not pointed at the end It's dull at the end so it doesn't pierce through the membrane. My new little tool 😍

I usually reapply coconut oil about every 45 minutes so I think olive oil would be the same or switch to the ointment. Just keep it clear of the bill so it doesn't stick to the nostrils.

Should I pull its bill all the way out?

It's only part way... I can't see it's nostrils just the end of the bill
