To Catch a Chicken

Has anyone ever used a large net of some sort to catch chickens in daylight? Was thinking about it the other day, but not sure if it would injure the birds, etc. Would love to hear from someone who has tried this before. thanks!!
That is how I catch mine in the daylight. I have a large one for catching large fowl and a smaller one for bantams and chicks.

Initially at night I would give my young birds treats in the coops. I still give the birds treats every evening when I collect the eggs. After they have had their treats they go into the coops and roost. What are you using for roosts? Just curious.

Ah! Good to know! That's why you got the "Enabler" badge! :clap
AND the BYC Educator badge, the most difficult one to earn.:old
I'm not much for 'labels' and 'awards'.
Am certainly not an enabler, more of a blunt pragmatist...
...but have always loved to help solve functional problems if I can share my own experiences.

Folks, I have a coop and an enclosed run. My chickens don't free range. Are there any secrets to catching chickens so that you can check them out, apply medicine, etc. without causing them too much stress? Out of my batch of chickens, most will come by and allow you to pick them up, etc., but I have two who are very shy and hard to catch. Thanks in advance.

I put in a t-post with a gate and some fence to make a small cage in the corner of my run. I leave the gate open until I need to herd a bird in, when I do I get them in the "catching cage" and pick them up. With the cage open, almost all the time, it's one of their favorite places to dust bathe. I also lined the "cage" with shade cloth and it seems to make them feel secure. I only use it for health issues or new birds I need to catch and introduce to the coop. Works for me.

I have used a long handled fishing net for years. This makes it easy to catch them day or night. The reach of the net keeps me physically away from them so they don’t panic so quickly. I put the net over them, immediately flip them (feet up)over and they usually stop freaking out almost instantly. Like I said, I have been using this method for years and have never injured a bird.
