To Free Range, or Not to Free Range...

I had to introduce my four dogs that had never really been around chickens to my chickens and I have been able to get everyone to get along, including the stray cat that showed up recently. I started by just putting my dogs on their leads and sitting them near where me and my chickens were. I walked over to my chickens and squatted down and started talking to and touching them, just like I do my dogs. I moved the dogs closer, reminding them to behave and let the chickens just wander around them. Once I did that several times I felt comfortable letting them loose together in the yard, but I purchased some training collars off ebay for three of the four dogs (just in case they were beyond my reach and went into "pack pursuit" mode). It didn't take too many hits with the collar when I told them to "leave them" if they got close and hungry looking near my chickens. These dogs ranged from a lab to a great pyrenese to two dalmation/?/mix dogs, all with varying degrees of stubborness and built in chase instincts.

If you do some googling, you should be able to come up with some shrubs or plants that horses won't eat. Personally, I'd prefer the look of shrubs to dog houses just for asthetic reasons, but that's just me. Mine go through, in and around every plant and tree I have around here, including the boxwoods around the foundation of the house, so I don't think you'll have to worry about your chickens caring what kind of shrub it is. :)

Thank-you for the reply. That is a great idea about the dogs. I will try it!

I prefer the bushes too. I will google and see if there are horse resistant bushes. LOL. My colt just chews on everything, like a teething toddler.

I have 8 chickens (1 BO, 1 Buff bantam, 1 deleware rooster, 2 RIR's, 2 Cochins, and 1 Australoupe) and i was wondering if its a bad thing not to let them Free-Range

I thought I would post a little update on the free ranging.

I have been letting them out to roam every weekend and recently for an hour or two when I get home from work. On the weekends they are out all day. During the day I often find them back in their run even though the gate is open. They all go back to the hen house to lay their eggs. They have their favorite spots in the yard and never go very far. The best part is how they follow me around. It's too cute. I can get them back to the coop anytime. I just have to start walking in the direction of their coop and they come running! They LOVE scratch - it's like catnip to them and that's what I give them when I get to the hen house.

I don't let them out unless I am home.

I have been having sooo much fun watching them go after bugs. I have also noticed that after they have free ranged I get an egg from each of them. If they don't get to free range I only get 2-3 eggs. I have four chickens.

Nice update! It certainly is fun to interact with them.

When mine hear me yell *peep peep* they come running to see what I have to offer. When I let mine roam the entire yard they stay close to cover, and they go in and out of the coop all day.

Hope you don't have a loss for a long time.3 years for me and only loss was from illness so far...knock on wood.
