To sand or not sand?

How do you like Texas? I was thinking moving to Texas or Florida in the future. I like growing tropical fruit trees.

I love it. We are in the southern most part of Texas. I have orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, avocado, mangos, pomogranets and I just started some grapes. Property down here is affordable. The state is very vet friendly which is a big reason why we chose it. We are both disabled vets so it makes a huge difference for us. Cost of living is good. No income tax. Hot but great weather.

Do the chickens try to eat the coffee grounds? I'd be worried about that, as it seems like it could be harmful.

The caffeine is mostly gone in spent/used grounds.

Also some of us drink decaf (not by choice, hubby can't have too much caffeine).

Update:
I used wood shavings but they were really hard to scoop so 2 months later I have switched to some sand, but only in the coop. I'm using cleaned straw in the nest which I'm still not sold on, but it's working for now. The sand mixed with PZ works great and it gives them a soft cushy place to walk. lol. I've read that you should never use coffee grounds, yet as you said, you've been using them for years so not all info on google is correct, ha shocker.
Anyway, Ive moved on to trying to mix my own food so they don't get all the filler and nasty stuff. Could use some help on that too, ya'll are awesome!

I would put mulch down. Try to get hardwood bark mulch if possible, or a fine screened mulch. Both of though's are nice and soft for there feet, and they love to dig through it for grubs, and little insects! I am gonna put mulch down in my duck pen to help prevent bumble foot!
