To the horse people out there....

There aren't any snobs in distance riding. Or, if there are, they are very quickly humbled by riding through mud and rain and by having members of the opposite sex get a clear view of their posteriors while trying to relieve oneself squatting next to a horse while said horse tries to trot after another group of horses and said snob is hopping with pants around ankles trying to keep up with horse.

I can picture that now...

Oh there are snobs in endurance just like in everything else...there are probably snobs in grain silo washing, and toenail fuzz growing, and flat leaf parsley growing.

'My chicken's teeth are bigger than your chicken's teeth!'

I suppose everyone's heard the story - it can be changed to be about any type of riding, but the type I heard it in first, was show hunters.

A very uppity type lady is in a fancy restaurant with her wealthy husband and sees a friend of theirs.

'Why, that's not his wife!' she remarks. 'No, it's his mistress' says hubby.

'I'd NEVER stand for such a thing!'

Hubby says, 'Well you better finf a way to, because I have a mistress too'. He shows his wife a wallet photo of a gorgeous young woman.

'I'll divorce you!'

'Go right ahead, but it will be the end of the expensive imported horses, the European coaches, the horse shows, the winters in Florida, and the big truck and trailer'.

The wife thinks for a while.

Then she puts her chin up and says, 'Ours is prettier'.

Yes on the fourms or even in real life alot of horse people like to say they are more experienced than they are and are better than you. The real test is how well they ride and really know what they are talking about. I run into alot of people like this i due the hunters and the Eq. Trust me there are many unkind horse people but there are some really nice people too though.

I've found that on the majority, a lot of people are very uppity and snobby.

That's only on general equine forums, not specific types.

For example, I may not have a horse of my own at the moment, and I may not show, but that doesn't mean I don't know anything, like some of them want to push on you.

I have met many wonderfully friendly people that are into horses, though!

If anyone's found a mostly friendly one, I'd like to know.

I've ridden Western almost my whole life, and I'm just starting English. I've read a lot about it, watched it, so I know a few things, but I'm ridiculed in a way because I haven't been doing it since I was 2 on my own pony.

That's exactly the boat I'm in!! I've definitely watched and read my fair share and I'm definitely understanding the rules and such, but I'm still new and sometimes people do frown on that. I will keep you posted on the forums I find that are newbie friendly! What discipline do you want to do?

I'm going to be starting English, Hunter/Jumper to be exact.

That should be a lot of fun! I went to a h/j show this weekend - out in the pouring rain! It was mostly very small children and very small ponies....and parents cheering them on.

But we have a lot of adult h/j shows in this area too.
