We covered the “ceiling “ of our coop with hardware cloth, then we put the roof on. Our roof looks like yours. We didn’t want to take any chances with small predators crawling under those openings.

Definitely use hardware cloth. Getting chickens bring predators. Before we got chickens the most I've ever seen was stray cats. Now I've seen hawks, raccoons, and foxes. And I live in the middle of town. Better safe than sorry.
