To worm or not to worm?

Getting ready to buy my wormer. Was planning on using Valbazen. But just read some posts about needing to pretreat with Wazine. Would like to only get one product. IS the pretreating really necessary?

Also - I want to make sure I understand the withdrawl period for eggs. Don't consume the eggs from the first doze through 14 days after the second doze, right? Can I feed them back to the chickens or the dog without concern?

Forget the wazine, just use the valbazen both times. You're correct on the withdrawal period. It's best to toss the eggs in the garbage.

I'm new to keeping chickens. My three year old Japanese bantam (adopted her last November) was broody several times this summer. A few weeks ago she went directly into a molt. I noticed her comb was pink and attributed it to the broodiness followed by molt and was giving her extra protein to aid her through it. Than I noticed she was having labored breathing. I have separated her, brought her inside and put her on her antibiotics. She has been on them for a week now. Breathing is improved she seemed to have more energy about 4 days into the antibiotic therapy. I let her out in the yard but the last couple of days she became weak again. I started investigating more thoroughly and notice she has lice. Another hen has a mite infestation. I keep the coop clean and use DE every time I clean out the litter. In the spring I scrubbed the coop down and left it open to dry out.... I was hoping to use natural remedies and was feeding the girls cayenne pepper in their feed also.
I went to feed store yesterday and picked up some Valbazen and permethrin. I plan on dusting every one with permethrin today and cleaning out the coop thoroughly again. Here is my question, would it be too risky to worm her now while she is weak or should I go ahead and dose her with the valbazen now? Or should I pre-worm with wazine than the valbazen?
Thanks for all your help.

As mentioned there is no need to pretreat with Wazine. Valbazen is very safe and works slowly over the course of a few days so there is no big worm kill-off all at once so no risk of blockages or dead worm toxicity. Whether this is a good time to deworm her...I don't know. It might not hurt to wait until you have the mite situation cleared up and she is stronger after her bout with the respiratory illness. Unless you have reason to believe she is carrying a heavy load of parasites.

Be sure to re-treat the birds and coop for the mites every 7 to 10 days so you are killing the eggs that hatch. You might try Sevin spray on the coop, it's easier to get it into all the nooks and crannies where the bugs like to hide.

Thank you cafarmgirl. I dusted everyone with the permethrin yesterday. Whew! What a task that was. In the process I noticed that the two hens that were broody this summer are the ones who are infested the most. That's a young Buff Orphington and my little bantam (It was not as bad as some of the YouTube videos I've seen but enough to make me feel pretty horrible for them. I really did not see any parasites on the others. They looked pretty good.
I was going to wait a few days to give my bantam a dose of valbazen but after reading more threads on here I'm thinking parasites may be the very reason she was susceptible to becoming ill in the first place and although, I see no signs of parasites in her poo or any of the other girls. Like I mentioned earlier, by biggest concern is dosing her while she is too weak. She did spend a couple of hours out in the lawn yesterday and looked happy about it but than I found her asleep later.... I think I am going to give her a dose of Valbazen this morning and pray for the best. Is it 1/4 cc for a bantam? She is rather thin but her abdomen seems a little swollen. Since the rest of the flock is not showing any signs of illness I was thinking I would wait a month till egg production dropped to dose the rest with valbazen but now I am thinking I should probably go ahead and dose all of them now? The rest are about 8 months old and have never been wormed. I also have 3 YO magpie duck who lives with them. Is the valbazen safe for her? We live in Oregon where its rather sunny and warm through the summer but we are heading into our infamous rainy season.

I treated my new 6 month pullet who I have in quarantine before introducing her to the rest of the flock. I wasn't sure I needed to but figured it was a good move since she was new. I am so glad I did! Her poops had been very loose and STINKY!!!! I wasn't seeing any worms but... I dosed her on three days ago and things already are better. Poops are much more normal and not as smelly. She's also looking less happy to be in quarantine which I take as a good sign!.

I also went ahead and dosed the rest of my flock. They are only 2.5 mos old so I gave them only 1/4 cc. Again I haven''t seen any worms buy I figured I might as well get everyone cleaned out before introducing. All seem to be handling the Valbazen with no issues.

Worms are normally absorbed in the digestive tract as protein after worming. If there were a gut full of worms, you might see a couple excreted.

I have 44 layers. They are just one year old this month. I'm curious about the worming issue. I saw a video by a woman who says that if there is 'poop' on the eggs, they have worms. Is that true? I am going to attach her video and I'd appreciate input on whether she is correct or 'out there'.
advance to about 1:19 in the video.

Not true.
