today is day 18!!!

unfortunately i have just checked and another chick who had pipped on the bottom of its egg ( ie facing the floor of the bator) has also perished in the shell...had i known it had pipped i would have helped it out. Both of the dead chicks are fully formed and look totally normal. Im not sure why this is happening when the first two got out no problems. So only one egg left to pip and we will see what happens. So far 2 chicks out of 11 eggs...i was hoping for better seeing as how i had 5 good eggs but never mind i still have more in the bator and i can still hope for the 5th egg to hatch properly. I will sit and watch and help when it pips this time. Both of the dead chicks had pipped and unzipped about an inch of shell:(

On a happier note i have candled my 9 BLpolish eggs and 6 of them look good which is great. In my other 8 silkie eggs 4 have babies in and 4 are clear.

guys what am i supposed to do about the last egg? I mean it looked good day 18 ( they all did)...but it hasnt pipped yet and the other 4 already did...is it toast? I have left it in there and have the humidity up in the 70s so i hope it does something. The two babies i did hatch are beautiful thanks JJ!

Hi aran,
any peeping or tiny wiggling of the egg?
What day was/is this? If you get really gutsy or desperate, you can candle the egg, look for the air pocket and start your own pip there.

I had a suspision with one of mine that it was dead and opened it that way myself and confirmed that it had died in the shell.

Just a thought. You may want to wait, you may want to check. But if there is no peeping or moving I would wonder if it was alive still or not.

I just went through this myself. I had an egg that had pipped and unzipped about an inch. I could see its beak going in and out, so I left it be. That was late last night, then after hours of nothing more today, I helped unzip the shell to find that it had died sometime after pipping.

Why do they always seem to die after unzipping about an inch of the way out?

its tremendously disappointing to put it mildly to watch a baby anything die helplessly like that. I wish i knew what went wrong so i could not do it next time.

hey guys...i couldnt help myself as this is the end of day 23...i candled the last remaining egg which has not pipped yet and buggar me if the little guy is not still moving in there...now what? Do i help him out given what has happened to his two siblings?

lurky...i am about to give it a go...i looked at him/her in the egg a few mins ago and dont see any movement though:( I just dont understand what happened when the first two came out just perfectly. The only thing i can think is that they ran around and rolled the remaining eggs all over the bator...which they did!

the news is all bad...he was dead in the shell with alot of yolk still not absorbed..does this mean the humidity was too high? I have other eggs in the bator ( 4 good silkie eggs due 7/23 and 6 good polish eggs due 7/26)--> do i now need to get the humidity down under 50% for them? I had the bator around the 50-60% mark for most of the last incubation until day 18 when i cranked it up to 70+%
