When I was a kid growing up in Michigan I used to go visit my Great Aunt Adele on her farm up in Lexington, MI. She always kept a bamboo cane by the door and warned everybody to keep an eye out for the roo if the hens were out of the coop. She had this gorgeous RIR roo that was the meanest thing I have ever seen. He wasn't afraid of anything, not dogs, cats, sheep, cows, nothing! Even the barn cats would head for the trees or the rafters or someplace when he was out. I swear he had fighting blood in him from somewhere. My Aunt kept him out of all the roos because he was the only one that kept her hens from getting attacked or killed.
Anyway, I was up there visiting Aunt Adele one week and the roo came after me from behind. Guess he didn't think I had the cane with me because I turned and smacked him a good one. He went tumbling and before he could get up I grabbed him by his legs and carried him upside down for about 10-15 minutes. After that he would stay on the other side of the barnyard whenever he saw me.
