Today's temperature = # of eggs.

Hi Gifa!! I didn't really have time to check the conversion, but, I knew if I was wrong (which I was) that there would be an intelligent individual out there to correct my mistake!! Thank you.

TammyN: Thank you for the idea, it has been so unbelievably windy that the plastic didn't hold up well, even the heavy gauge. I know I'll need to do something different next winter for sure, this is our first time with chickens so it's all a learning experience! I will check out that tarp on ebay you mentioned, (sometimes the shipping costs 2 x as much as the product to have things shipped from the U.S. to Canada). Have you tried the oatmeal or the sunflower heads? I think I will give the chickens some left over spaghetti tonight.

I have always found it kinda cool that the scales converge at -40... You've nearly been that... and that... to me, is incredible...

The high was 10 degrees today, and I got 3 eggs from my 6 layers. I have 13 hens, but 7 of them are almost 5 years old, and are only laying maybe 1 egg a week, sometimes not even. I'm getting 10 more hens in the spring, so that will help boost the production a bit.

Gifa: I can't believe it either, really it is so cold. I can't wait for spring to arrive, the chickens too I am sure. You'd think that being so cold in winter, it wouldn't be too hot in the summer, not so, sometimes it can be +40 Celsius (that's 104 in Fahrenheit...I used your conversion chart

), I know that can be an average temp for parts of the U.S., and that some states get even hotter, both extremes are hard to take.

I remember that first year and all the mistakes I made and panicked about everything that first winter worrying about the chickens. My husband was wondering if I was going to survive that first winter with them. LOL

My chicken love leftovers. We have a compost pile that we throw all our discarded food on and the chickens have a feast. They love pasta. LOL

Oh, I almost forgot - 20 degrees but now wind - YEA, 16 eggs but I forgot to check three nest boxes and had to give one egg to my dog. It was frozen and cracked. :)
