All 3 laying hens good as gold! EE, Black Australorp & Salmon Fav (were 1 yr old this past Nov)
Just cannot wait til my BCM's begin laying. Everything I read though leans toward very late maturing so I'm guessing it will be a while! 8 Hens!! All are really turning out beautifully!
4 are approx 10 weeks old; 4 approx 12 weeks old..then I still at the 12 week mark have silver laced wyandotte & golden cuckoo marans to wait for! Anticipation .. ugh...Oh But ........... "Patience is a virtue"!!

The more I read the more I'm inclined to say jersey giants or astrolorps too. They are pretty, and yes the feathers glow in the sun! Got our big coop finished last night so hopefully all my girls will start laying. My bantam hens are laying and my ms prissy white leghorn has layed for last two days! So my husband and I are both thrilled! Chickens are amazing, we are really enjoying them!

I'm still getting on average 6 or 7 eggs a day from my 6 BSL and 3 BSL/Wyandotte crosses. Not too bad I should be having 1 more pullet laying by summer as I'm selling all my other babies and 3 out of 4 of my roosters. Keeping the Famous Whiski though. He is so good to my girls and babies.

I have had 10-11-12/17 since the first of Feb. Mostly 11/17. Our weather has been very mild and the days are definatly getting longer. I no longer beat the birds out of bed in the morning.

Bruce, I am surprised your favs are being lazy. My three are pretty consistant. I didn't get 3 Fav eggs every day, but usually go at least two a day. BTW, how big are your Fav eggs? Mine are on the smallish side.

That's cool. I have considered spending an entire day to watch and see who lays when, but I don't have the patience for it with 17 to watch. 10 of them are sex-links and it is very hard to determine who is laying with that. I have one Araucana and one Houdan and their eggs are easy to distinguish. For everyone else, it is a guess it there were no witnesses!

I have considered spending an entire day to watch and see who lays when, but I don't have the patience for it with 17 to watch. 10 of them are sex-links and it is very hard to determine who is laying with that. Yes, only having 7, and just 5 that are laying, that for the most part all lay a different color makes this easy. I am fortunate to be able to stay home all day having left the corporate world to become a teacher.

I love to learn so because these are my very first, I am going about this for the maximum education possible. And I don't feel the need to hoard what I learn.

Amazingly we have no problem telling individual birds apart. (Each has a name and distinct personality.) The problem lies in identifying who layed what withoutactually witnessing. We are 58 and rainy today so I will have to see what we get when I get home. Yesterdaywas 65 and we had 12/17. My chart won't be as detailed but I will give a breakdown next time of what breeds laid what.

mid to upper 20's and lows to around 1 all this week and through the weekend. Yay. Yay Yay. Eggs coming out of my ears. And falling out of the sky off of roosts. LOL. (young girls not quite knowing what to do with that thing coming out of their behind early in the morning)

6 for 7 layers. And I think I might be getting another to join us. her comb getting bigger and redder, practicing in the nest box.
