Wow 12 inches of snow! And I'm complaining about rain! It's rained here for 2 days and supposed to rain thru wednsday. I have one buff orpington laying, 3 bantams, 1 cookoo maran and 1 wyndotte 1 leghorn... So I'm happy with that! yea...
9 eggs. My girls aren't helping with the theory today. Though, for real, it has held pretty well most of the winter so far. Maybe I can blame it on the snow and sleet this morning, 6 of them were laid before 10 and the trashy weather didn't let up until closer to noon.
I was moving wood from the shed to the front porch, many trips, and on the way back one trip I noticed all the girls (OK, all but the STOOPID one that is trying to hatch shavings) were out in front of the barn. They were careful to stay on the paths though, not romping through the deep stuff.
Today the temps were high of 34 F and low of 23 F. I got 4 eggs from my 6 laying hens. My other 8 hens are on their way to being retired layers due to their age. Yesterday the temps were 38 F and 27 F and I got 3 eggs. They are starting to slow down in production now. They do not have any extra light becaus I do not have electricity out in my barn. They still lay fairly well without it.
Supposedly we had a high of 41 today but the dampness did nothing to help. Low of 21. And I got 7 eggs.
I think the girls know that Spring is right around the corner
9 eggs. Most of the girls went for a wander again today. My wife tromped a path to the fir tree, no snow under it, and the girls had a good time. Apparently the melting snow made ice on the slope down to the barn with the coop. Where is the video camera when you need it? My wife said some of the girls were falling down when they slipped on the ice. She said it was pretty funny. Shhh, don't tell them they have wings and can FLY!
It is warming up a little. It was almost 40 today and I got 48 eggs from @ 60 hens. My last young hen started laying. I still have a few molting. I turned off the lights to try to slow them down a little with their laying.
We're having a beautiful weather day today....42 and sunny most of the day. Only got 6 eggs though.
Some seasonal weather tonite...snow and sleet and then back up in the 40s again tomorrow.
