Nice... My weekly totals have been going up steadily since it hit it's lowest (16 eggs) the week of Jan 23. This week I got 33 eggs. That's 4 or 5 a week out of each hen, with the exception of Inara, who took a brief vacation in the middle of this week and only managed 3 eggs.
While the temperatures are really nothing new to the girls, the presence, quantity and persistence of snow was... You can see how the snow storm that rolled through on the 20th disrupted them. Yolanda was back up to a 4on/1off block before the storm hit, and went back to a 2on/1off block. Similarly with Bridget's cycle. Inara was extra mad about the whole snow thing and took a few days off. But thanks to Kaylee coming out of her 9 month mini-molt, and Nandi turning on this week, the overall count was up 7 eggs from last week.
Kansas City is due for another snowstorm in a couple of days, so it will be interesting to see if it is as big of a disruption for them as the last one was. I spent a lot of the 20th piling up snow around the perimeter and sealing up all of the gaps with duct tape on their run to cut down on the amount of snow that was blowing in to their run, and this seemed to please them greatly. Yesterday, I opened the door to the run to see if they wanted to come out and play, but they were not interested in venturing more than a couple of steps from the door... today we offered the same invitation, and all but 2 bolstered up the courage to walk along the path we'd shoveled between the back door of our house and the coop. We even thawed enough today to melt down to the grass in a few places, a treasure for Zoe. Both Kaylee and Yolanda were brave enough to venture the part of the shoveled path over to the compost bin.
So, I am hoping today's little outdoor adventure in the white stuff, coupled with the fact that the piles of snow around their run block their previously unobstructed view of the back yard will hide any drastic changes in scenery and make this next storm less of a big deal to them. Combined with the ever lengthening days, as long as the next snow doesn't wreck their cycles, next week should be our first full week of having all 7 hens going at the same time.
