Today's temperature = # of eggs.

We live in northern Vermont and I've been very surprised at the egg production we've been getting. We have no artificial light source.
We have 11 hens; 7 golden comets, 3 barred rocks and 2 australorps.
On Monday 1/21, our high temp was 18 degrees and we got 11 eggs
Tuesday, 1/22 our high was 7 and we got 9 eggs - (None from 1 australorp and 1 rock) Tuesday night, temps dipped WAY below 0 so the heat lamp went on for the first time this winter, though we wrap it in heavy tinfoil as the girls don't sleep when it's on... their coop has skylights so they still get daylight even when they don't get to free range :)
Wednesday, 1/23 our high was -4 and we got 10 eggs- missing 1 rock.
Yesterday, 1/24 our high was 0 and we got 9 eggs- missing 1 comet and 1 rock.
I collected 5 comet eggs this morning before leaving for work, so my guess is 9 total for the day :)

I see many folks have golden comets... they have been very consistent. Gladys (pictured in the background below) is my best layer... she was the first to hen to give us an egg in early September... a double yolker at that. Gertie is the hen taking center stage next to the broom!

6 degrees Fahrenheit. Winds are damp and get right to the bone. But hey... I like the 6 right now.

Yep it's official...
My RIR and Wyandotte are taking their winter break now after they laid most of the winter already. Thank you girls, for your egg service. See you this spring if not sooner.

They swapped laying duties with the BO and BA who no doubt were brought back into laying with the introduction of the heat lamp Sunday-Thursday for those frigid temps.

3 eggs for 3 layers: BO, BA, and one darling EE to brighten up my egg carton! Not sure if anybody else will join the Layers Club this afternoon.

Here's who is not Laying: RIR, Wyandotte, 4 EEs.

But I like this thread and will update tomorrow.

I've packed the heat lamp away & I turned 'em loose in the run with these balmy temps today:

Saturday through Monday: we get some 30+ temps! Woo Hoo!!!

Pretty girls. I'm thinking I need some sex links (Golden Comets are red sex links) to help out the BAs and EEs. Everyone that posts sex link chickens seem to be having phenomenal winter lay rates. I have 4 girls that lay pretty consistently and 8 that are (to be generous) sporadic.

This sounds like fun!
Yesterday it was 2 degrees at 10 a.m. and went to a high of 18.
Redcaps: 2 eggs from 3 hens.
Appenzeller Spitzhauben: 2 from 3
Dominiques; 1 from 4
Ameraucana: 1 from 1
Silkies: 3 from 4 and the non layer is broody!
All the pens have light except the Silkies.
We've had single digits and high winds for a almost a week now. This is a drop from a week ago.
