Kept them locked up and I stayed inside - windy, freezing cold - twenty, teens, sleet, freezing rain and snow. And to think it was 71 degrees two days ago. Eggs are there with the flock. So, the count for today is ???????

You should be getting a lot more eggs than that. Do you add to their length of day with a lamp on a timer? Doing so makes a huge difference in egg production. With my three older pullets (9 months old), we never get fewer than two eggs per day, and sometimes three. Aim for 15 hours of light per day, with most of the supplemental light provided in the morning.

That is what I do - lamp on timer and have them wake up earlier in the morning than keeping them awake longer at night.

My coop on Feb. 12, 2011

Yep, that's what it looked like here that year. My flock wanted out - making a big fuss. I knew they did not realize what they were to encounter, so I opened the door slowly and half a dozen came running out and STOPPED. The last one out was blocking the others from coming out and they were hollering to get out, so I moved her. Two more came out and STOPPED and that was the end of the exiting of chickens. They knew. I picked up the other five original ones where they were "frozen" in place along with the last two and placed them back in the house. A very quiet rest of the day.

I'm thinking the girls will be spending much of today in the coop, the wind is howling here in NY. I always say living in mid state NY makes us appreciate the Spring all the more, I have to admit I am ready for it.
I too put a light on a timer for 3 extra hours in the morning, don't know if its helping or not, but I am still getting about a 1/2 dozen each day.

They didn't come out of the coop until mid afternoon. I lured them out with scratch in the morning, but they rushed right back in after eating.

I've been following this thread with amusing interest. What a great idea! I have 44 hens all different ages, with the oldest being at least 4-5 yrs old, mostly black australorps, and here's what I have for the last 7 days:


21 eggs, 48°-37° warm water, cayenne in feed some minnows
14 eggs, 55°-39° warm water, cayenne in feed rainy/wind no treats
17 eggs, 54°-34° warm water, cayenne in feed wheat grass/sprouts cloudy/sunny
19 eggs, 55°-43° no warm water, no cayenne in feed cloudy/windy/cold
23 eggs, 63°-43° no warm water, no cayenne in feed cloudy/windy alfalfa/lentil/oat/radish sprouts
18 eggs, 73°-51° no warm water, no cayenne in feed cloudy/windy no treats
22 eggs, 74°-38° no warm water, no cayenne in feed rainy/cloudy/windy alfalfa/lentil/oat/radish sprouts


I'm getting the highs and lows from the Weather Channel, but I think the temps may vary by a few degrees-Sure has seemed alot colder at night and in the AM when I let them out!! LOL

Today was like 35 or so and I got 19 eggs form 25 hens. Not sure if all are laying yet. All my hens are barnyard mutts.

Temp drop yesterday for us too. 9 degree for a hi. But breezy making it feel colder.

I got 2 eggs for 4 layers.

5 on winter break.
