My three BRs all took the day off yesterday, but today, the girl who'd been on vacation for two weeks laid an egg first thing this morning. I knew it was her, because there's still a smear of blood appearing on the shell. I sure wish that would stop happening. I anticipate the other two will lay eggs today, as they had been doing all along before yesterday's hiatus.
Weather has been mild. On their "day off" yesterday the high was 66, then it rained last evening. Remainder of the week will be highs in the low 50s and lows in the low 30s.

Stats since 1/28:
Date Hi Lo #
1/28 65 45 3 EE, Black Australorp & Salmon Fav
1/29 33 22 2 EE & Black Australorp
1/30 64 27 3 EE, Black Australorp & Salmon Fav
1/31 28 7 2 EE & Black Australorp
2/1 17 14 3 EE, Black Australorp & Salmon Fav
2/2 28 16 2 EE & Black Australorp
2/3 24 10 3 EE, Black Australorp & Salmon Fav
2/4 38 19 3 EE, Black Australorp & Salmon Fav
2/5 38 24 2 EE & Black Australorp
2/6 36 28 3 EE, Black Australorp & Salmon Fav

Your Fav is far more reliable than my two. One has averaged just over 3 a week since she started laying but had a 22 day stretch with only 5 eggs starting on Jan 7th. The other only 2.3 a week, 9 eggs total in the last MONTH.

Bruce, I am surprised your favs are being lazy. My three are pretty consistant. I didn't get 3 Fav eggs every day, but usually go at least two a day. BTW, how big are your Fav eggs? Mine are on the smallish side.

Small for sure. I got my scale on 1/11. 42 to 44 is 'normal, sometimes a 46. USDA Small STARTS at 44. Did get one 56 a week ago from the non broody one.
Amazingly we have no problem telling individual birds apart. (Each has a name and distinct personality.) The problem lies in identifying who laid what without actually witnessing.

It gets worse. Thought we had them all figured out but Fae laid a darker than usual yesterday. And we KNOW it was here because "first there was not egg, then there was" and she was the only girl on the box. Plus it was the last egg of the day. Not expecting another one from her today. So even when you KNOW what color they lay, it can change.

Wed was Low 15F, High 27F - 5 eggs
Thu was Low -4F High 7F - ELEVEN eggs, a new record

All but the Fav that thinks she can hatch pine shavings.

Low last night was 4F, NOAA says a high of 17F today, even though it is currently 22F. Snowing too so I imagine the girls will choose to hang in the barn. Not supposed to get the big snow of those down south. Hang in there Bostonians. Supposed to get 2 FEET! We're only scheduled for 5 to 11 inches.

Low last night was 4F, High today was 25F - 9 eggs.

I wish we got a little more snow. We have hardly had a winter this year. I guess I shouldn't complain.

Yesterday Hi around 58 we got:
9/10 sex-link
3/3 Fav
1/1 Houdan
1/1 Araucana
1/2 Banty Cochin

Total - 15/17

Pretty good!!!

Today60
9/10 sex-link (BTW we have one molting)
2/3 fav
1/1 Houdan
1/1 Araucana
0/2 Banty Cochin (one is molting)

The fav eggs I had the last two days are running 47-50g. What size does that make?

I totally gave up on shape/color ID with the sex links. Those eggs are like chameleons!

Yeah, don't complain! We've had:
- 3 water pipes frozen, thawed with a plug in electric heater blowing into the wall.
- 1 split water pipe (IN a 2x4 where it went along the wall) that caused a nice rush of water out the crawl space for who knows how long
- A frozen washing machine drain pipe (could still be frozen for all I know, not willing to run the washer and have it flood the floor again)
- And the current unresolved problem, no heat on the first floor. Wife thought it was the thermostat but it is functioning. Figured it was the valve on the pipe at the furnace not working. Got a new one. Determined that the motor in the old one was OK but the valve was stuck. Got that freed up but still no water flowing. Figured maybe there just wasn't enough water in the pipe (grasping at straws) I decided to connect the drain to a pressure water source to fill it (which should be automatic but maybe if there isn't enough water, the pump can't do the job). Since the people that put the system in weren't smart enough to put a drain on both the outgoing AND return pipes so I could remove the back pressure of the closed loop, I removed the valve and tried pushing water through. No go. Which means, near as I can figure, the hot water pipe is frozen somewhere. Given the stupid way it was installed, running in a chase along an outside wall, I have no idea how to thaw it.

2 degrees warmer and 2 fewer eggs

Here is the USDA egg size "chart"
Jumbo > 71 g Xlarge > 64 g Large > 57 g Medium > 50 g Small > 43 g Peewee > 35 g

So your Favs are running on the high side of Small whereas mine are Peewee to Small with the occasional 'mid-range' Small. The little Cubalayas are pushing up into the same range.

Now compare that to Yue's 84 gram egg from today - WEIRD texture, like it was made out of papier mache.

No flash so the texture is easier to see, it is a whitish egg. It is like that all over.
I have to think that one felt a bit odd on the way out.
Her 82 gram egg yesterday looked perfectly normal (except the size!)
Yue is an Ancona and her usual range is low 50s!

Low last night was 38 and the day time high was 64. I got eight eggs from fourteen girls. I'm averaging 50% production right now. I'm thinking about adding four light Brahama hens to my flock and a roo.
