Afternoon fisherlady. I trust you had a good weekend?

Friday was awesome, best fishing day all year on Erie, left camp and got to Rural King and picked up some day old chicks to give to a broody who had eggs that didn't make it...she refused them, so pulled my oldest hen (who adopted chicks once before in a strange circumstace) and put her into a dog cage with the chicks and sure enough she took them! By yesterday she was actively feeding them and today she is into full broody mood and chatting with them and actively mothering them.
Spending a bit of time with them in the coop was one of my first coop chores when I got home. That hen (Brownie) is priceless and just cemented high honors status for life by adopting these chicks out of the blue!

Meanwhile, Henrietta, the wicked broody who refused step childen has some more eggs, her weight is still good and she doesn't get bothered by the other hens, so will let her go again...though hatch day is set for a day we will be home to supervise. If she rejects the chicks we will give them to Puff (who will be hatching around the same time frame) and Henrietta will go to a breaking cage and be removed from the pen of potential broodies.

is it common for hens to reject their chicks?

No, it rarely happens if they hatch them...but it can happen.
She rejected ones we tried to graft to her, she evidently will be the unusual hen who needs to hear and feel the chicks hatching to transition from setting mode to hatching and mothering mode. We will see how she does on this fresh batch.
