Toe punching ducklings ...question?

Well, I did it. Wasnt bad at all. I did the left foot outside web for 2009 hatches. They didnt bleed, and the ducklings didnt even notice it.

I did ask about toe punching, not banding, if you could please keep your opinions to yourself.

I've never toe punched but I think it sounds like the most fool proof way of marking. I know from experence that tags and bands can come off. With toe punching you don't have to worry about the leg band becoming too small which can seemingly happen almost overnight sometimes. I actually bought a toe punching tool, but haven't used it yet. We have a cow herd and we always eartag the new calves, but has already been said eartags can and will pull out. We also always ear notch the calves so if they lose their tag at some point in their life we can still identify them as ours from the ear notch. I doubt that anyone is going to punch so many holes that the feet look like swiss cheese!!

I just need 1 punch in 1 web. I just want to keep track of the year they hatched. I would never punch their feet so much they look like swiss cheese.

I toe punch my chickens so I will know the different bloodlines. Ive never had a swiss cheese looking foot either.

Yes, our bird was banded with "Foleys waterfowl" and a band number so I guess whoever "took" the bird did not expect it to be identified by toe punching.
I don't know if you can tattoo a call duck, but I might have to find out.

We mark our captive bred Mallards by snipping off the hind toe on the right foot. I didn't want to do it at first, but finding bands was a #*&@.

So we broke down and did it... easier than clipping toenails!

But I'd like to toe punch ducklings from MY birds to keep them separate from another bloodline, and was wondering how bad it was. Sounds like it wasn't bad at all.

Nope. Wasnt bad at all.

I was worried the ducklings would scream, but they didnt even notice. And a couple times I couldnt avoid the veins, but there wasnt even any blood.​

I do it right when they came out of the hatcher. But Ive been told you can do it a couple of days old, but you will get some blood. just use some flour or corn startch.​
