Toes with something on them

I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find information on what this could be. All three of my chicks had at least one toe or multiple toes with this little dark colored nub where the nail is. One of the chicks has it on almost every toe. I was thinking it was dried poop but it hasn’t gone away. About two weeks old.

My first thought was dried poop also. Have you tried dabbing lukewarm water on the spots throughout the days to see if it softens and falls off? Kind of like what you do for pasty butt.

They're toe poop balls. You have to soak and pick them apart. Or it will kill the toes

I have a question about poop balls. My hens are very skittish and whenever I try to remove it, they freak out. Would I be better letting them run around the tub with minimal water in it and see if they fall off?

Full grown birds... about 13-15 weeks old. As for bedding, I'm using a paper based (Shredded cardboard-like stuff) bedding until my aspen shavings come in. I'm also out of sand, the poor girls

Can you post pictures? How soon are the shavings supposed to arrive? Have they had the poop balls since they were young, or did they develop recently?

The poop balls formed within the past week and a bit. As for the shavings, they should arrive before the 17th of January. And pictures... I'll try to take some later
