My tomatoes were infested with mealybugs and ants, and I had to trash them before the bugs infested the rest of my garden. Now, I know it isn’t safe for chickens to eat the tomato plants, but is it safe for them to have the soil the plants were grown in to scratch in? When I pulled the plants I found some grubs and worms, plus whatever ants weren’t on the plants/mealybugs. And they’ve scratched a lot of dirt out of their run and could use some more, and each tomato pot has two bags of soil in it, which would help build back up what they’ve scratched out until I can get another couple bags of straw.

Would it be safe to give them the dirt, if they're not going to have any of the leaves or roots from the tomato plants?

No reason I know of not to allow them to work that soil. Mine are allowed to roam the garden after the growing season is done, even with the tomato vines still in place. Of course the tomato plants are dead by then. Even if the plants leave a trace of solinine in the soil the chickens would have a hard time of ingesting enough to harm them.
