We have the little grape tomatoes coming out of our ears, so our girls get them daily after I put them in my mini chopper for a couple of seconds. They see me coming with the plate & they come running!!!! They absolutely love them!!! Squash too!!

The confusion will be because the greens are poisonous, and somewhere along the line someone thought that meant the whole plant. Tomatoes are in the nightshade family, like potatoes and tobacco. Tomato fruits and potato tubers have been bred over hundreds of years to remove as much of the toxins as possible for human consumption. All the toxins are still in the leaves and stems though. So the fruits of the tomato are fine, and cooked potato, just don't feed them the rest of the plant.

question to everyone, my girls riffle through my veggie garden and are exposed to quite a few items that aren't suppose to be "good" for them? I have eggplant, zucchini, cucumber, tomato & pepper plants growing currently. They graze through there picking at the leaves on the lower parts of the plants? Ok in small doses?

They're probably not eating them but getting at bugs. I was watching one this morning attack a small bush but with careful watching I could see she was dropping the green bits, and eating the bugs.

The odd taste here and there shouldn't be bad, but it is a risk; some animals will be more sensitive. Like, I had one rabbit who readily ate ivy and it did her no harm. I've got one who only has to look at a lettuce and she gets poppy butt. If they've been doing it for a while though, I wouldn't worry.

my chickens LOVE tomatoes. Walk anywhere near them with red round things in your hands and you better be ready to duck and cover No ill effects that I've ever seen. Except maybe avoiding buying red small balls for the kids
