Are tomatoes ok for chickens?
Yep, I gave mine a bagful yesterday.
Last summer my girls went through at least 80lbs. of tomatoes, they "tear them up." The one problem that you have to be careful of is that the protein % in their diet might be lowered enough to suppress egg production. Whenever I give them an excess amount of fruit or veggies I supplement with some 31% protein dry cat food.
Please don't tell me that the cat food is bad for them, I know what the "treat chart " says about it. This is what I do and have not had any problems, this is not a recomendation for any one else to do so.
Quote:I have read that if you want to increase the protein intake for your hens that you should give them a handful of dry cat food. I've done it.
But only give them enough that they will finish quickly, or you might attract unwanted visitors wanting to get in.
