Tombi from Pretoria, South Africa

Hi there, I'm Tombi and I've never had chickens, I just bought a coop but found it a bit lacking, especially after all you good people's posts, so I may need a lot of assistance. I'm thinking of getting about 8 Lohmann Brown hens, as they are relative easy to come by in South Africa. I have 3 dogs ( soon to be 5 until my rescues get taken again by my daughter), 2 Siberian cats, tropical fish and loads of snakes and dassies (both wild). I live in Pretoria with my kids and have been obsessing about this chicken thing for a few months now! I am looking for a good layer that doesn't take up too much space, my yard is large but against a hill so a bit difficult. I only understand metric units so have had to convert constantly! Very much looking forward to joining the community and hopefully some day I can assist others. Attached is a picture of my coops as they are now, we are extending!
Hello and welcome to BYC @tombi :frow

Looking at your picture the first thing that comes to mind:
You could easily convert the space between the coops and runs into added run space by running a fence between the back ends of the two chicken coops and the front ends of the two runs, Then covering with hardware cloth and... voilà!
Maybe place a nice big pot right in the middle, with oregano or other herbs beneficial to chicken health and add some roosts, so they will be able to get out of each others faces if need be.

Whatever chicken breed you decide on, have fun!
