Tonic for chickens? a funny story

I used to work for CVS pharmacy and I would get all kinds of questions from customers. One of the best ones was from an old gentleman asking directions to the analgesics aisle. He wanted a tonic for his chickens. Of course I'm thinking of liquid analgesics for muscle pain and I looked at him stupidly and asked.."How do you rub it on them?". He kind of chuckled and said, "No honey you pour a little of it in their water". I felt silly, but after he left I wondered what it was for. Anyone ever heard of this?

Probably for pain. Perhaps he had a bird that had been attacked and was recovering from injuries.
