Yuck! you have the really nasty grasshoppers! But here's an idea...Chocolate covered Grasshoppers anyone?
Grasshoppers do go in cycles and there are some controls that you can use that are nontoxic.
By the way I hope you stepped on that pair in the picture!

We have also had one of the driest years on record and have also had an incredible grasshopper infestation all summer. And, yes, my chickens are in heaven running around - it's so funny to watch them. It's really a riot to see a grasshopper make the mistake of jumping into the run when the hens are locked in... it's mass chaos as 29 feathered bodies fight for that one little grasshopper!

However, ours have been really small this year (we often have the really big ones here just not in such huge numbers) which has been strange. Most of them have been under one inch in length.

My friends in town haven't had any extra grasshoppers this year... I'm pretty sure they are all here on our property.

the ones in the pic i found on the net as an example but thats what they are the roads and everything are covered with the suckers they are everywhere they are decreasing now. but not much they hens donts even have to fight over them they each have all they want and many many more.

My opossum would love them too. She likes the really big ones. My dad brought some with him from Florida when he came and she was in opossum heaven.
