Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

I miiiight work up to looking in one, but it won’t be until tomorrow night. Haha thank you for being so helpful. Technically today is day 21 and I set them in the evening so I’m going to wait a bit longer. Half of me wants to look and the other half isn’t sure yet.

Only day 21! Then you never know! You may still wake up to another peep! Fingers crossed, but either way you did great! :celebrate :jumpy:jumpy:jumpy Congrats on all the sweet peeps!

Good night my fellow hatchaholics! lol 😴💤

Last night around 8:00pm I noticed a little discoloration in the shell of one of my silkie eggs. I thought maybe it was the start of a pip but it was at the skinny end of the egg away from the air cell. So I figured it was just the lighting or something. Well I just got up now at 4:00am and it’s definitely a pip. It’s still very small but there is a tiny piece of egg shell on the floor of the bator so definitely a external pip. It’s at the skinny end. I’m worried my chick is malpositioned and may drown. If it has externally pipped does that meN it is getting air and may make it? The pip is still tiny. This is the egg that had a small air cell At lockdown. Day 19. Day 20 starts about 3:00 today Friday. Thanks I’m really worried as I only have two silkies that made it to lockdown.

As long as there wasn't too much fluid in the egg (and this goes for other positions not just a baby in the small end) it should be able to get air with an external pip. :)

Since it's in the small end its internal pip and external pip are one and the same so expect for a longer wait from external pip to hatch than in eggs that pip on the correct end. I think up to 48 hours would be in the normal range. Usually they can turn to zip just fine in this position but I'd watch it to make sure it doesn't struggle with the zip (when mine have trouble zipping they widen that external pip, usually peep a lot and will continually strike out with their little beaks but don't get anywhere). Since it just pipped recently you won't have to worry about zipping for quite a while though and it's likely it won't have a problem.

Good luck, I hope everything goes smoothly for the little one, and congratulations on the first pip! :celebrate

If it's only day 21 tomorrow I would let them go longer. They may not be ready to hatch yet and still moving into position. I've been told that it can take upwards of day 25 for some eggs to finish hatching. Unless it looks like the membrane is shrunk down on the chick which you can sometimes see when you candle. I would definitely leave them and give them more time.

If it looks like a bruise then it's probably malpositioned with it's head down in the small end. You can assist and egg that's like that but you still start on the end with the air cell not the other end so that you can see the blood vessels and if they are disappearing or not.

I will be setting 8 cream legbar eggs on monday. I’m going to get them on sunday. The eggs look so pretty, i’m excited about hatching them! I’m going to be staggered hatching weekly from then on untill my hatching addiction is fulfilled for this year again. I want to create a rainbow laying flock, so i’m getting different breeds every week. Jippie!

thank goodness my chicken friends here don’t really sleep! Ok so I’ll leave it be and see what happens. The other egg has not popped yet that I can see. I think it may have made a tiny bit of progress in the past 2 hours but not sure. I cannot tell if it actually broke through the membrane or not to get air. Here is a picture

If by bruising you mean dark spot I don’t see that. I posted a picture above. And I do think the little hole is a tiny bit bigger but not sure. I haven’t heard any chirping which concerns me. Thank you for your help.
