Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

Hmm...I'm not sure. I hatched goslings in the IncuView the first time I used it and they tripped over it a bit and their little legs kept slipping, so I switched up my tactics. They're obviously much bigger than chicks though and they didn't get splay leg, I just think it had the potential to cause it because it's somewhat slippery.
...while typing this I could have sworn I left the turner in with chicks once too. I found that hatch from last year, the chicks were more stable on it than the goslings were but what bothered me was I had a chick that kept hanging it's head over the edge of it.

It was this chick, though I didn't take a picture with it's head hanging, you can kind of see what I'm talking about. Tired little chicks flop around a lot and this one kept flopping there with it's head hanging over.

Gah I don’t know which route to go and I need to decide like now lol. I may just leave it in since that’s one less opportunity for me to drop one taking them out.

Interesting! So you’re hatching upright?

Yes. They get out just fine and cause a ruckus whether they’re upright or on their sides.

I thought I would share something I found interesting with my hatching eggs. This will be a somewhat nerdy post...
When I candled the Salmon Faverolle eggs I wasn't able to see any development in these two eggs so I put question marks on them to check another day. Well I grabbed just those two today and checked again, one was still clear and the other had a little black dot floating in it that wasn't there before. It's possible that I just missed the meat spot, but I candle my eggs before I set them in the incubator, and I candled for viability on day 3 (they're on day 5 now). So I broke the eggs to see what was inside out of curiosity. One was definitely infertile, I can't even see a blastodisc that could have been fertilized so I'm thinking maybe it was an immature hen. Well, there's a clearly fertilized blastoderm on the egg with the meat spot but no signs of even starting development. Isn't that odd??? So A) a meat spot that I couldn't see in the early days of candling but was clearly visible on day 5, and B) a fertilized blastoderm that never developed. Is it because of the meat spot? Has anyone successfully hatched an egg that they saw a definite meat spot in?
I'm sorry it's so hard to photograph what I'm able to see in person...

I've never had one with a meat spot develop. Like at all. Don't know the "why" behind it but they seem to do exactly what you experienced. A whole lot of nothing.

Lockdown has officially begun here!!! Only 3/15 eggs are questionable. There are 2 Marans eggs and a dark Olive that might be clear or quitters. They glow too much for day 18 but since they don’t smell, I’m leaving them in. My 4 Ameraucanas (1 Wheaten, 3 White) look great. The one last survivor from my dozen that got scrambled in transit is still alive! If it miraculously hatches it’ll be a Black F1 Olive Egger. I’ve got 1 Wheaten and 4 Blue or Black Birchen Marans looking good as far as I can tell. And 2 F2-4 OEs looked good as far as I can see. Can’t wait for the first pip.

The "F" in genetics mean filial generation. It tells you how far removed they are from the original parent (P) stock. F1 means they're the first generation offspring. F2 means they're the grandkids. And so on. Does that make sense?
