Well I got excited seeing all the chicks and candling pictures so I candled. Not a single one developing on day 6. My guess was right my young cockerel is not doing his job yet. I’m going to open a few eggs they laid this week but I don’t think he is mounting the hens. He is 8 months old, I see him dance for them I haven’t seen him breed them, I was hoping it was happening but I just hadn’t been around to see it. :hit

I'm sorry about the eggs not being fertile I can relate! I was so disappointed when my nicest girls started laying and my cockerel wasn't getting anything fertilized. He's just shy of 9 months now and is just starting to get the hang of it. I very rarely catch him in the act, maybe once a week despite going out checking on everybody several times throughout the day. I think I've only seen him do a good job mating once...the other few times he was mating with the poor girls heads or sides.

I hope you get some fertile eggs soon, hopefully your boy will figure things out! :fl

Oh no! Maybe wait until day 10? I usually wait until day 10 before I toss eggs unless they're definitely bad or stinky. I have a 1500 lumen flashlight that I use for candling so I can see what's going on quite early, especially with light colored shells, but before I had it I could just barely see the development around day 6-7 with my first candler.
Otherwise, I'm sure he will figure it out very soon!

I candled my eggs this morning. Day 6. So exciting!!
Out of the 15 Bielefelder that were left overnight in freezing temps 5 were fertile.
9 out of the 10 bought wheaten Sulmtaler
19 out of the 20 bought white Sulmtaler
15 of 32 wheaten Sulmtaler from my chickens are a go.
14 of the 32 are a maybe...they get to stay a few more days.
So, all in all doing well.
