Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

Aww so many adorable babies, I'm loving the pictures!!! :love

This hatch is over, the two difficult assists actually made it to hatch! :celebrate

The three I didn't expect to make it all have some issues but I'm hoping they'll overcome them. The first assisted baby that hatched just had a minor problem with splay leg. I put a hobble on her and she is getting around great now. The other assisted baby and the one who hatched from my iffy looking dirty egg who I also assisted (it was positioned with the feet over head so an easy assist) both have curled toes, one on both feet and the other on just one foot. They also had really stiff legs at hatch. The first that has the curled toes on both feet seems to be getting much better at using its legs and they seem much less stiff now. The other still has one leg that is very stiff, I tried seeing if the knee would bend but it really bothered the chick so I'm leaving it be for now and hoping it will improve given some more time. I put band aid boots to help with the curled toes on both chicks.

I'll try to get some pictures of all the babies soon. :)

He is a beautiful boy! :love

What a neat looking color! I have no idea what it will end up like but I bet it will be interesting! :love
The poultry cell from tractor supply worked miracle on my wry neck splay legged chick. The nutridrench just wasn't working but two days with hobble and drips of poultry cell right into the beak from a q-tip so too much didn't go down did the trick. Hope it works for you <3

You can get other paint colors for sure! Red complicates things, dominant white doesn't inhibit it the same way it does black pigment. I know you can get blue paints, chocolate paints, and splash paints. They just aren't recognized colors. :)

I'm not sure what a red based white is, does it refer to ground color? Ground color (silver or gold) has an effect on the paint color too. I think gold based is more likely to have bigger spots but off color is more likely and the white may not be as crisp. Silver helps with pigment and a crisper white but the spots may not be as nice. I think a lot of breeders try to balance the two ground colors to get the best of both worlds.
Im going to take some pictures of my silkies today so maybe you guys can tell me which colors I have I supposedly have one from BBS and 4 partridge. The partridges all look different from each other though. They are 3 weeks old now so maybe better luck figuring out their color.

One ofmy silkies pipped near the bottom of the egg. Should I be concerned?
If by bottom you mean underside it should be fine. Ive hatched chicks that pip on the underside no problem. If you mean skinny end then thats a crap shoot. I hatched a skinny end (away from air cell) in this current hatch but I was lucky it didnt hit a vessel etc.

Yes, it pipped on the underside. Did you need to assist the one that pipped in the skinny end? Seems very rare that that kind of position would turn out well.
Well if you can see the beak (Im assuming you mean externally) then its getting air and should do ok
My husband and I laughed after the first one hatched and was rolling all the other eggs around because everything changed again. Haha! You're right though, the ones with the underside pips did just fine. ❤

Phew! All caught up. Have been working outside alot the last several days. Finally built an external nesting box for my second coop and purchased premiere one perma net so Ive been clearing my woods a little and hoping to have that all set up today!! Kinda cold here though 22F this am hoping the ground isnt too frozen so I can get the ground rod in. I think Ill pop over to the March HAL so I can keep in touch with all you friendly and knowledgeable peeps!

Yes it hatched. I got lucky it was able to pip externally without hitting a vessel or anything. It hatched fine but did have minor splay leg and on the second day it came down with pretty serious wry neck. But I treated it and it is now 3 weeks old and doing absolutely fine thank goodness. I only had one hatch from this batch so I purchased 3 silkie friends for it and another of my friends had a singleton (swedish flower) hatch so she gave it to me. So now I have 5 total. Taking pictures today to figure out colors. Congrats on your hatch!

Last chick just popped out so all three hatched unassisted.
