Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

What a sh***y weekend, so out of 11 that went in to lock down only FIVE hatched one of which had to be assisted.
Out of the seven all were facing the wrong way, 5 malpositions, heads tucked under wings, heads between legs. 2 pipped the wrong way through blood vessels and bled out.
Ive never had such an awful hatch :(
Im now left wondering if its simply related to the Brahma/araucana hybrid mix because i just cant understand why so many didnt position themselves properly???????

Oh no! I'm so so sorry! :hugs What a difficult hatch! Are they the Rumpless Tufted Araucanas?

No they are the british standard lavender araucanas, i did read about the fatal gene in the other type and i dont think its that.
They were completely fine apart from the disorientation, i broke into the aircells on day 23 to check and found DIS, what baffled me was all the malpositions, the poor things couldnt even pip at the wrong end :(

I'm so sorry you had so many malpositions. :( :hugs

I'd really like to know more about possible genetic causes in regards to malpositions. I've been plagued with getting more than I should from my paint breeding pen and I'm starting to suspect my rooster. I think he was actually malpositioned himself as a chick (there was another chick that looked like him that I could have gotten him mixed up with). The one who I think was him was from shipped eggs and had an air cell that went really far down one side of the egg. I thought the shipping plus the abnormal air cell was what caused the malposition but now I'm not so sure....

This is the chick I am pretty sure is him. You can see how his head was between his thighs.

Having thought about it non stop for two days a defective rooster is one two things i think it could possibly be, the araucana was only about 7 months when he started treading the hens.
The other is that the Brahma eggs dont have a "pointy end" as such, its near impossible to tell the air cell end without candling, im wondering now if the araucana part just doesnt navigate and turn and gets confused in the last few days,

I may join as I'm going to set ducks, but not sure if I can keep up! 🤣 I did learn a ton in this one. Thanks for the link. Might see you over there.

It's tough to keep up in the Easter hatch-a-long because there are usually SO MANY people that participate. It's great fun but last year the Easter hatch-a-long wasn't my first hatch, but it was my first hatch-a-long and I basically dropped out and occasionally popped in to check updates, lol. Hopefully this year now that I have participated in so many hatch-a-longs I'll stick to it. I have set up a lot of projects for myself to keep track of this month though, I'm doing the "Undesirable Egg Experiment", an accurate weight to air cell size example image on both Bantam and Standard sized eggs, the March hatch-a-long, Goose hatch-a-long, and now the Easter hatch-a-long...so hopefully I don't lose track of anything! :lau
