I have about a dozen hens, and when they wake, a couple of them start clucking, and then more chime in, and it gets really loud. It usually lasts for 10-15 minutes and then they quiet down. Is that normal?

if they were lockup in th e coop they get noisy! they just want to get out . Its normal for them to be noisy, they are simply saying good morning ! and I am hungry!. I always let them out as soon the sun barely comes up and feed the right away. they are less noisy.

They have an outdoor run about 16'x5', and an indoor coop around 10'x12'. They are inside the coop on the roost squawking---if they wanted they could go to the outdoor area, and eventually do and spend most of their day out there. They always have access to food and water. We do let them out in the yard a few times a week, but only when someone is around to watch them. We have hawks and foxes and coyotes and such in the adjacent forest and have lost one chicken already. If we let them out that early, they don't stand a chance against the predators.

Could it be their egg song, when they are laying? My girls are only 11 weeks, but someone told me to get ready for the morning 10-15 minute "egg song" that hens do when they are getting ready to lay an egg. Bock, Bock, Bock,.. BOCKAAAAA!!!!

That's the sound exactly! I guess I have to get used to it if I want eggs...
