too many kinds?

I would be more concerned about getting a rooster or two (assuming you don't want roosters). Sexing for most breeds is advertised as 90% accurate. Last year I bought 18 chicks. For some odd reason I kept thinking that I shoulf get 2 SLW instead of 1. Guess what happened. 1 SLW turned out to be a rooster. We are allowed to keep roosters but we did not want any (several reasons). We rehomed him to someone that was going to use him for breeding. I felt lucky that I only got 1 rooster out of 17 chicks.

This year I am getting 24 or 25 new chicks. About 1/2 are coming from a local breeder that guarantees they will be pullets. He will happily replace any rooster with a pullet that slips by him. I would not be surprised if I end up with 1 or 2 roosters out of the 24.

Humm... maybe I should add a couple more to my list to replace any potential roosters.

It is pretty hard to resist picking up one or two extras when you pick yours up from the breeder or feed store and see tubs of them sitting there available.

. I will have to keep my trips to the feed stores to a minimum from now until the end of May.

I have had my original chickens almost a year, and I've lost 2. The first was my son's chicken, and we lost her to a hawk. (our run is our orchard, so not covered) The 2nd was our Orp, and she flew into the coop and broke her neck.

I'd get a few extra's in case you get a rooster, or lose 1.
