Too Many Roosters, need advice on shooting them

I put mine on Craigslist, and some nice people answered my ad. Wanted the rooster for a pet. I would recommend Craigslist myself. Not everyone is crazy and gets roosters for cockfighting.

Cockfighting---tsk, tsk! Mods would get this banned if you discuss cockfighting at any levels.

Whatever method the OP is comfortable is fine with me, wasteful or not, the demands of roosters are not very high. Pullets have a very high demand.

actually i was not discussing cockfighting. at all. it is wrong and illegal for a reason. so thanks for your imput but it is not needed.

just grab them by the foot take their head off process the meat and put the animal to use it was put on earth for.

There is a way on line about breaking their necks using the handle of a shovel or Hoe or rake. The one I saw was on You Tube from Dirty Jobs about chickens and it was younger adults doing the show not the original guy... It seemed the less messy/bloody and kindest on the chickens! One quick pull while you are standing on each side of the wooden handle and the deed is done! I think that is what I will do if the time ever arises!

I've shot roosters, but only because they were roosting WAY high in the trees at night, and basically hard to catch, I use a .22 "CB Long" which is a quieter ammo made by CCI, I shoot through the heart/lung area. Nice large target, the bullets are round nosed so they don't create a lot of damage, just pass on (or mostly) through, making things leak in there. The rooster kinda trots a few steps, lies down because he doesn't feel too good, and dies.

If you can catch the roo, hanging or using a killing cone is good, hanging them by their legs makes them calm down it seems, but if you can't, and feel shooting is your best option, I think my method is a good one. You STILL have to be careful of your backstop, and it's still not very legal, but my neighbor and I are always putting down possums etc so the sound of a quiet .22 doesn't bother the neighbors.

If you really want to use the .22 just pick up a box of .22 shot shells. They sell them at Walmart and are effective and have very little energy and penetration at distance. I have used them on rabbit and they work great at 5-10' but will not travel like a bullet will.

I don't know anything about the site I linked, I just did it so you could see what I am talking about. Just grab a box from Walmart.

ETA: You get a little spread from them also so it will be much easier to get a good hit on the brain. It's always been a one shot kill for me.

I don't bother with shooting chickens if you just injure it ,it will be running all around leaving a blood trail, preditors can smell that a mile away.
Just get some loppers, place the bird between your knees and place the loppers over the roos neck ,well you get the idea.
