Too Many Roosters, need advice on shooting them

Because I'm squemish about the blood

I'd give one to your Amish neighbors or ask them how they would ring their necks. If you plan to eat them, you are going to have to bleed them out.

IF you shoot them are you going to process them for food?
If you are going to just bury them, wouldn't they serve your community better if they were given to someone who might or might not use them for food?
I have a LOT of respect for the Amish. They don't have any kind of insurance, they take care of each other. That means if a male dies the rest of the community takes care of the widow and her children.
If you give your roos to an Amish neighbor, he might use them for breeding, give them to someone else for breeding or process them and give them to a community member who needs the assistance to feed their children.

Hey all - completely new here, and admittedly haven't lurked all that much (so I hope I'm not speaking out of turn), but...

I watched a youtube clip about butchering chickens not all that long ago, and there was a nice humane action that the "host" took when he off'd one of his flock.

He took a narrow knife, and slid it into the chicken's mouth in such a way that it cleaved the bird's brain in half. I hadn't heard of this before, and it appears to be a really quick, painless action to take in order to show some mercy to the bird.

If the amish don't want your roosters, this may be a much easier way to do it rather than the .22. Shooting them just seems like way more trouble than it's worth, and fraught with potential issues.

Here's the youtube "link" in case you're interested:

He explains it early in the video, and then demonstrates it at about 3:55.

Hope it helps.
Tim.

kinda dumb to kill em. at least give em a chance and find a home for em. they could at least make a meal for someone or something. and if u have questions about using a .22 then u shouldnt be using one for this. and if u sell em to a cockfighter then at least they have a chance to fight for their life...

Cockfighting---tsk, tsk! Mods would get this banned if you discuss cockfighting at any levels.

Whatever method the OP is comfortable is fine with me, wasteful or not, the demands of roosters are not very high. Pullets have a very high demand.

Sorry for late reply..saw this posting..I can relate to how you feel! I rescued 17 baby chicks out of the trash this past feb..all but one turned out to be roos...I had the hardest time trying to decide what to do with them all...I knew I could not keep them all. The hardest thing was for me was knowing what was going to happen to them..I had plenty of people wanting to take them but when they told me what they planned on doing to them...It made me feel so bad! I, like you wanted to know how their last moments were going to be spent and even though I knew that most of them were going to end up on the table...I knew that I wanted them to have a good life up to that point. I think bringing them to the amish was a good choice..I brought 15 of my rooosters to a farm I found that allowed them to stay togther in their own fenced in area and live as a chicken should until their time came..and not all of them were going to be culled...but I understand how you feel...you gave them a good home...and feel responsible for them. Good luck!
