Yesterday, probably I'll say between 4 and 5 PM when we weren't home, DW went to retrieve eggs and found scattered feathers and a dead hen still limp, no rigor mortis, that had been eaten from the abdomen. Looks like culprit dug down a foot to get under the 2x4 heavy gauge Turkey Wire buried in the ground. First in 2 years of getting these birds. It's one of those things expected living in a deep rural area. No anger, wailing, broken heart or funeral, just a fact of chicken keeping. It will be back. Hopefully I can get a bead on it with the .22WMR.

Bad surprise, sorry.

Hot wire helped us to deter any climbing and/or burrowing predators. Maybe give it a try.

Just a tip that works for me is I folded the bottom section of fence at the ground out 18". Everything usually goes up to the fence and starts digging and that changes there mind pretty quick.
I do that also, only did an eight inch crimp though, but the critter was determined, has deterred in the past. Like I say, hunger is a great motivator.

Yessir, predators can be determined.
One day me and the Missus went to the store, came back to find half our flock wiped out.
A momma coyote was grabbing one hen at a time and taking them to her den.
Also lost our roo, he put up a fight!
Hope you get the critter in your sights.
