Started out to go to our new doctor and fill out a request to move records from the old one. Was just going to town after that to pick up some prescriptions and some scratch. Just out of our neighborhood and a mile or two down the road, we see in a distance an SUV coming toward us and a little dog running down the middle of the road. Obviously, it had no road smarts. The man was driving slower and slower and as we approached each other, the puppy ran off the side of the road and laid in the grass, then as the man started to speed back up, the pup jumped up and started to veer in front of him. My DH held up his hand for the guy to stop so the man did, got out and picked up the puppy. Said he was from out of town and didn't know what to do with it, so my DH said to give it to us and we'd take it to the vet's office.
The little girl was soft caramel color with some white on her nose, freckles across it and huge bat ears. Looked like maybe she had some Heeler in her, but who knows with mutts, right? She was covered in fleas, had ticks in her ears and a round tummy that I'm sure was full of worms. She was so scared, her heart was pounding and we took a detour to town rather than the doc's office. My friend Anne in Blue Ridge recently started the Blue Ridge Humane Society and has a thrift store that helps support it, so we went there. Were told to drive around the corner to the "cat building". Well, no one was there except a lady cleaning it. She did help us and finally was able to reach Anne on her cell phone, who asked if we would take the poor pup to a new animal clinic in town.
Met the vet, who read my BYC shirt and was interested. Apparently, she has guineas and chickens and wanted to check us out, so I gave her a BYC business card. Hopefully, she'll peruse our little hangout here. Anyway, the vet said she wasn't even four months old after checking her teeth and she'll clean her up and de-flea her and I'm sure the new Humane Society will find a good home for her. Naturally, Anne said I need another dog.
She sure was a cutie! I'm happy she didn't end up as "road pizza". I just hope there wasn't a whole litter dumped out there somewhere. We drove home that way and looked for other pups, but didn't see any.
Afterward, there was an unexpected detour with my DH's meds and we had to drive another 20 miles to a different pharmacy to get one of them. I'm bushed.
