Does that mean a bird is not productive, by not being able to lay enough eggs to match a production type White Leghorn? In that case, no breed is productive. . .

If there's a breed I've never ever heard of at shows, never seen someone show off, even of hatchery quality, never see anyone else talk about, but still is APA recognized - It's the Catalana. Seriously where are those?

There were some very nice Catalanas at the Shawnee national last year. About 10 birds or so were shown and they actually looked really nice. I was, as you would have been, very surprised

But they had nice color, size, and 6 points on their combs

Lamonas are extinct but could be fairly easily recreated and all the Hollands I've ever seen looked like someone decided that the latest hatchery barred rocks would sell better if they put a new, heritage name on them. So I'd consider them dead unless you could prove they actually came from pure Holland stock--basically impossible to do. Sultans are basically in the same boat, but some hatcheries carry a bird that has all the traits--none worthy of really being called a breed characteristic...A lot of the color varieties in the more common breeds are very rare as well. I'm sure there are lots more threatened breeds/varieties...White Rose Combs, Brown Cochins, Silver Pencilled Wyandottes, etc.

The chicks are culled down to be used as breeders, that's why the number drops.

The research was done by Robert Blosl, R.I. Red club and a few others breeders.
They may be popular at shows but how many of them birds were brought by the same breeder just under more than one name to fill the class?

I think the American "Pyncheon" Bantam should be on this list.....there are so few quality birds left...and the breed is very old....and an American breed to boot.... I can count on one hand...the few breeders that are doing something...anything with the breed.....
