Top Ten Worming and Wormer Misinformations - Graphic Pictures!

Thank you. Guess I have a reason to make another trip to TSC.

Edited to ad: Any suggestions on how to weigh a chicken? I doibt mine would syay still on a scale.

You don't *have* to weigh them. You can look up the breed on wiki and assume the higher weight and dose accordingly.

Here are some examples:

RIR
Weight Male:
8.5 pounds (3.9 kg)
Female:
6.5 pounds (2.9 kg

Leghorn
Weight Male:
2.4–2.7 kg
Female:
2.0–2.3 kg

Barred Rock
Weight Male:
8+ lbs.
Female:
7.5 lbs

Jersey Giant
Weight Male:
Standard: 13 lb (5.9 kg)
Bantam: 38 oz (1.1 kg)
Female:
Standard: 10 lb (4.5 kg)
Bantam: 34 oz (0.96 kg)

Faverolle
Weight Male:
5.0 kg
Female:
4.3 kg

If you do decide to weigh them, you can also weigh them by holding them while you're on a scale, then weigh yourself on the scale. Subtract the smaller lumber from the larger number and that's the weight.

Thanks Kathy. Problem is they wont be that weight when I begin at 8 weeks old? I had thought of the "holding them while on the scsle" method, but thought a more exact (i.e. exact fractions) might be needed. Sounds like a ballpark is good enough?

Thanks again. I have learned so much in this thread

When I have one that won't stand still I take the scale to my bathroom and weigh them in the dark. Even the wildest will stand still in the dark.

I've tried the pelleted chicken wormer *hydromicin or something*. They won't eat it. Am I going to have to catch all 30+ hens, rooster, chicks and worm them by mouth for 5 days?

Welcome to the world of chickens! I have 63 to worm by hand by myself. It is quite a challenge!

You may want to consider Wormout Gel which gets all chicken worms. It is mixed into the water and given for 2 days. It's available online from Jedds. The directions of mixing are also online, and it has to be mixed very well. A little more pricey, but good for large flocks.

I suggest this method I use.

Wear a head lamp and do it at night. This way they'll all be roosting and not freak out. The head lamp allows both hands free and you can use an eyedropper or other method.
