Topic of the Week - Chicken Myths, True or False?

Pics
Yeah, it has. So here goes. The only one I have heard (that I thought was true) was one that my ex-landlady once told me; that brown eggs are no different than white shelled ones, the darker eggs were layed by dark colored hens. Needless to say that myth only lasted until my first flock started laying...:lau

As for the "Don't hens need a rooster in order to produce an egg?" myth, my response to that is (if it's a woman saying it):

"Do you?"

What's even funnier (sadder?) is sometime I have to explain that!

GAH that would be a terrible thing to find lying around every fall...
Personally, I doubt it would last that long, it would probably be gobbled up by the first bird to see it.

I just thought of one, and it's one I was guilty of perpetuating.

Ivermectin doesn't treat lice because they don't suck blood. Well I can guarantee you that ivermectin does treat poultry lice. Depending on the species of lice it can take 24-72 hours, but it does treat the.

It's not labeled for use in poultry, so withdrawal is needed for both eggs and meat.

Was just discussing this in another thread! What type of ivermectin? And will it treat scaley leg mites. I've read oral and subcutaneous but not topical.

I didn't think it would. I've always read oil treatments. Much more of a process but I'd rather do something that works then have to try and treat again and again.
Giving it orally does treat legs mites. Since topical treatments are absorbed through the skin into the blood it *should* treat them, too.
