Topic of the Week - Deworming chickens

OH THAT IS NASTY! lol Thanks.. LOLOL

Just got off the phone with Vetoquinol Canada. They told me to prepare the product as I would for chickens but they also said that Piperazine is NOT meant to be used on laying hens, ducks, geese, or muscovies and quails. Although they said it is a very safe product to use and there should be no problems if I follow the dosage on the package intended for meat chickens.

@DuckyGaze , do your ducks have roundworms?

-Kathy
No sure. I cannot check their poop... hard to see in all this snow. In the barn the poop is quite flattened out and mixed in the straw. Would be impossible to see.

The chicken poop looks healthy enough. nothing moving.

I imagine any worms will be dying right away since it is so cold up here.

I will do the treatment as indicated for meat birds. When I have a chance I will grab some duck poop and get my old microscope out.

Google doing fecal floats at home.

By the time you see worms in the poo, there are a LOT of parasites in there! If you aren't going to have fecals done by a veterinarian, buy the equipment and learn enough parasitology to do it at home. Mary

Thank you for all the help. Always nice to come on the forum because there is always someone that knows the answers. :)

My friend KsKingBee bought a scope, centrifuge, fecal solution, books, etc and now does his own fecals, which is a huge help in choosing what medications to use. Last I spoke with him he said he's done over 200 of them. He also did an experiment when he found large roundworms... For that group he used Valbazen at 7.5 ml per gallon, repeated in 10 day, then the repeat fecal had an egg count of zero.

I mix DE into the chicken feed and they get all they need to keep the worms out. I use a 1/2 cup to a 50# bag of food and that seems to work fine for me. Try it once and see if it is effective for you.
If you will read the fine print you will find on most commercial feeds have some DE in the mix I just ad more for great results.

Have you ever had before and after fecal tests done?

I'm still hoping SOMEONE will tell me how long I should feed my two hens medicated feed for roundworms?!! Using strike III. I dosed for 7 days of feed but I can't get any info on how many days I should for two hens, etc. anyone! I need to know! I've called the feed place, I've looked online, read tons of medical info....nothing.
