I’ve observed that the instinct to protect is often strong at a very young age. Not day-olds, but at several days old, if I scare the chicks with a normal hand in the brooder, they will all run, but those that remain in the corner are usually females and those who come back out first to challenge or investigate my hand are male.
After that, I use combs, starting at two weeks until maybe four weeks. After that age it becomes way less apparent as pullets develop their combs and cockerels diverge from one another in their development.
Between those two things, I have almost always gotten it right, but as a recent discovery showed me, even more reliable than those is my ability to get one in every batch totally wrong, lol.
