Topic of the Week - What is the purpose of your flock?

We all keep chickens for our reasons, whether it's eggs, exhibition, or just pets with benefits. This week, out of curiosity, I'd like to hear what your flock's main purpose is for you? I.e. why do you keep chickens?

Egg-laying?
Exhibition?
Dual purpose (meat and eggs)?
Lawn ornaments/pets?
Other?

Mine are for egg laying. I've had them since the first of May this year and they are quite entertaining, so that too!

Our original 4 (3 girls and 1 boy, but we thought we had 4 girls) were for eggs and because I just always wanted chickens. A coworker of my husband offered us barnyard crosses free so we got them. We've since rehomed the Roo, since 3 girls weren't enough to keep him happy. 3 was more than enough to keep my husband and I and our neighbors in eggs. We do eat quite a few but at any point we have 3 or 4 dozen in the fridge! The little easter egger crosses are laying machines!

Now a neighbor has given us four Rhode Island Red pullets! What we'll do with all those eggs is beyond me. Everyone around here sells eggs. They go for about $2.50 a dozen!

But I love them. 😀

I originally got mine as Nanna had them as did Great-Nanna and probably those before her. But I have always had them for eggs only not meat as my ancestors.
As time went on I fell in love with the whole process, Nanna considered this barmy 😂 .
Now, at 62 with mental health issues I spend a lot of my time with them in my ‘safe place’. They accept me as I am and come around me when I’m there, they don’t expect anything in return and it’s natural for me to give them my full attention so clearing my mind if my anxieties.
❤️

we have ours as a small commercial laying flock. I hope to breed as well, for utility, not for show. selecting the best layers, with the best vigour, livability, good flock behaviour and feed efficiency.

I got 4 ISA browns last spring for egg laying.. suburban area doesn’t allow roosters. Hoping to curb the weeds and insect pests in the backyard as well! Free manure compost for the garden, too!
