Topic of the Week - What is the purpose of your flock?

Which chickens do you breed?
I breed pure bantam cochins, and the rest are all hybrid chickens. I can say that my hybrid chickens include genes from Sussexes, bielfelers, bantam cochins, leghorns, polish, Old english game, and more. I also have a pure australorp, and several easter eggers that are new so I haven't bred them yet.

Such a variety that’s my goal one day when I get an area big enough to have chickens.

I have a tiny flock of 6 in my backyard in Monterey Park, California, 5 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles. My urban ladies are first and for most pets. The eggs, garbage disposal, and poop for my compost to garden are fringe benefits.
I have so many eggs that I give them away to my coworkers and friends.

I love chickens, I love there personalities and how some look so odd. My flock of 9 are simply pets. Eggs might be a bonus but mostly we cook and feed the eggs right back to the chickens. Me and my boyfriend just love them and keep them solely for pets :)

We are somewhere between discovering if this is doable and how do we just help these dumpster chickens! But I love watching and learning about them. They are very smart and unique. I like when they try to talk to us urgently sometimes 😆 Hoping they can contribute to eating a lot of bugs and picking at weed seeds.
